Slovenia has recently celebrated the arrival of its very first Leonardo C-27J Spartan Next Generation aircraft, which marks the initiation of a significant acquisition involving two such aircraft. This milestone in the country’s military aviation capability is accompanied by tremendous anticipation and excitement.
These newly acquired aircraft are set to serve a multitude of military functions, showcasing their remarkable versatility. Among their key roles, they will take on the critical tasks of tactical transport and even firefighting operations, facilitated by the state-of-the-art MAFFS II Modular Airborne Fire-Fighting System (accessible at www.maffs.com). This dual-purpose capability is expected to significantly enhance Slovenia’s preparedness for various contingencies.
Over the course of the past two years, the collaboration between Leonardo and Slovenia’s Air Armaments and Airworthiness Directorate has resulted in the signing of two pivotal contracts. Each of these contracts encompasses the acquisition of one aircraft, along with comprehensive logistics and training support, ensuring that the Slovenian Air Force is well-equipped to operate and maintain these sophisticated aircraft effectively.
The first contract was officially inked in March 2022, marking the beginning of this transformative venture. Subsequently, in November, the second contract was signed, solidifying Slovenia’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities. The total value of this significant deal amounts to an impressive €129 million ($136 million), highlighting the substantial investment made in bolstering the country’s defense capabilities.
The Leonardo C-27J Spartan Next Generation aircraft is an epitome of modern aviation technology.
