Aero-Flite Inc. has boosted its wildfire suppression capabilities by adding another Dash 8-400AT airtanker to its fleet, marking the third such aircraft in its arsenal. The company’s advanced fleet now comprises four CL415 amphibious airtankers, seven RJ85 Type 1 airtankers, and three Dash 8-400AT Type 2 airtankers. With a tank capacity of 2,462 US gallons, the Dash 8-400AT offers a substantial payload close to the 3,000 US gallon capacity of Type 1 airtankers while consuming significantly less fuel.
“The Dash 8-400AT’s ability to operate from shorter runways and higher elevations extends our firefighting reach, enabling us to support more remote communities susceptible to wildfires,” explained Chris Niemann, General Manager of Aero-Flite. “Its versatility is highly valued by government agencies aiming to enhance their firefighting capabilities.”
Many current airtankers are converted from aging military or commercial aircraft, facing issues with parts availability and airworthiness due to their advanced age and demanding operational environments. In contrast, the Dash 8-400AT, derived from the widely-used Dash 8-400 airliner, is one of the most modern airtankers available, ensuring a steady supply of parts and maintenance expertise for many years.
Conair Aerial Firefighting, based in Canada, recently completed their 20th Dash 8-400 airtanker, delivering it to Aero-Flite. Conair offers both airtanker-only and multi-role variants of the aircraft. Saskatchewan, Canada, recently placed an order for four aircraft, including two Dash 8-400ATs and two multi-role Dash 8-400MREs, set for delivery starting in 2025. The multi-role version can be used year-round for transporting personnel, cargo, and medical evacuations.
“This new addition represents a significant milestone in expanding our services to meet the growing demand for large, modernized airtankers across the US,” added Chris Niemann. “Our Dash 8-400ATs, with two delivered in 2022 and contracted to Washington State, and our third arriving in late April, are now ready to support firefighting efforts nationwide. We plan to further expand our fleet to assist state and federal agencies in enhancing their wildfire response capabilities.”
Aero-Flite will conduct heavy maintenance on their expanded fleet during the winter months at their Spokane, Washington hangars and newly acquired facility in Chico, California.
